I do not believe that Beyonce is purposely passing, but the people who are airbrushing her is making her what I have deemed as "negro acceptable." The reason why we as a people cannot move any further is because issues like this are too often dismissed. Whites very often choose images of blacks with which they are most comfortable. You have Jessica Biels who has a biological black parent, but she successfully has transcended the race barrier. There is Carmen Electra, another half black sister who is considered hot, hot, hot. Angie Jolie who is actually Hispanic receives more rave reviews than Eva Menedes who happens to be on the darker end of being Hispanic. So, what's happening is bigger than Beyonce. This is about the same tried and true racism, choosing blacks or people of color who are one the whiter side of their race.

this happens all the time, sad to say. the powers that be i think do this consciously. i'm not a beyonce fan, but i think she probably has some control over how her image is portrayed.

i hear how folk say she is natural under her weaves, but i have never seen it. that image would help many women who have issues with natural hair. thank goodness i'm beyond that issue :)

I think the house Party Chick you are referring to is A.J. Johnson. Here are some pictures of her from IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0424458/photogallery-granitz-0) but are not that flattering.

After those infamous OJ magazine covers, it is hard to ignore the lighting and darkening of black people when it fits the editors' agenda.
I do agree that personal preference can stem from parental attractiveness and influence. But I can not ignore that media and your local cultural influences play a heavy part on determining what you like. My dad was medium complexioned, but tall dark skinned men seemed to always catch my eye. Maybe the boy from elememtary school made much more of an impact than I care to admit.

Thanks for your comments Jamie. Nope, my fiance' doesn't fit into my preference mode and looks nothing like my mother. Hell we didn't even like eachother for a year or two. I guess one day she smacked me in the head with a brick and drug me back to her cave. She's gorgeous and there's no denying that, just not a yella curly headed red bone.

Maybe it's just me, but Beyonce looks pretty much the same all of the time to me. She chooses to wear weaves that look like "white girl hair" and such. The magazine might be doing a little bit of work on her, but not much. She is a light skinned woman anyway, with blonde weaves and wigs. How else would she look?

It's just too confusing. I myself am half white and half black, but many people think that I am Latina. There really is no one way to look, especially as a black female. And no one is really satisfied anyway, so it's fruitless to please everyone.

Just a sidenote: Does your girlfriend look like your mother (younger version, of course)? My friend just asked me recently if I chose black men bc of pressure or preference and I told her preference. But now, after reading your post, maybe it has something to do with my dad since he is a dark skinned man. I don't know. But then again, I wasn't raised with my father, so maybe not.

Interesting post. Beyonce is just using what she was given-and making a lot of money from it too!
